When I first started my low FODMAP diet, ketchup became something of an unknown. The ingredients listed on ketchup bottles is quite vague so you never quite know what your getting. Most of the ingredients are Low FODMAP but what makes up ‘Herb and Spice extracts’? You can almost guarantee they contain onion or garlic powder which are a total no no for Low FODMAPers.
I found some information on a website that listed Sainsbury’s own ketchup as low FODMAP but there was no way of knowing for sure so I didn’t think it was worth the risk.
What a relief it is to find a ketchup that states on the front of the bottle, Onion, Garlic and Gluten Free! This product comes from the Low FODMAP food creators Fody.
Firstly I was under no illusion that this ketchup would taste the same as my life long brand, Heinz. All ketchup brands are different and people can be very loyal to their brands. My son loves Heinz Ketchup and he won’t eat any other. If we eat out he refers to their tomato ketchup as ‘pub ketchup’ and rarely eats it.
This week is school half term break so my son and I had a lazy morning. Instead of early morning breakfast we decided on a cooked brunch which presented the perfect opportunity to try out Fody Ketchup.
So what does it taste like?
The sauce itself is nice deep red colour and not watery at all like some ketchups can be. The taste itself I found surprising, with a rich tomato taste and not unlike my favourite ketchup. I was trying to find the difference in taste with the absence of onion and garlic but it didn’t impair the flavour at all.
I carried out a little experiment on my fussy ketchup eater without his knowledge. Before taking the plates to the table I squeezed a portion of Fody ketchup next to his food and didn’t tell him I’d switched ketchups. He ate everything without question which confirmed to me, this ketchup is really tasty even for non Low FODMAPers!
I bought this Fody Ketchup as part of my order from FODmarket and it comes in a 475g bottle for £3.49.
